Giving Back To The Startup Ecosystem
โ

We have so many people at The Commons working at early-stage startups, and we know itโs uniquely rewarding โฆ and challenging! Given how nimble these companies are, thereโs often limited mentorship and structured learning & development opportunities.
Individuals in these roles are typically incredibly ambitious, hard-working, and eager to grow - which also makes them excellent community members! We know, because we have so many of you here already. ๐
โ
โจ We want to give back to the startup ecosystem with two full-ride scholarships to our October Product and October Strategy + Operations Sprints. โจ
โ
โDo you work at an early stage (seed/pre-seed) startup, or know someone that does?
This is an awesome opportunity to join The Commons to gain mentorship and structured skills building. ๐
โ
โEligibility: You or your nominee works at a pre-seed or seed stage startup
โHow to apply / nominate:
- Take 2 minutes to fill out this form before October 5th at midnight EST (you can fill it in as many times as youโd like!)

HOT TOPIC
Introducing: Circles
โ

In case you missed it, late this summer we launched The Commons Circles ๐ซ
โ
TL;DR on Circles ๐ A Circle is a small group of community members with a common interest in a topic. They meet at a set cadence to explore that topic together. In the past 2 months, we've launched four Circles with more on the way.
Check out past topics here.
โSo what's happening with Circles NOW?! ๐ค
We've heard you loud and clear: this community absolutely ๐ Circles and wants to lead & join more of them! So, we're putting that power into your capable hands.
๐ฅ Today, we'relaunching a new way for all community members to create and lead Circles through our Platform.
โ
โHow it works:
- Every month, we'll drop a list of the hottest topics from our community's discussions on our platform's Circles page
- Upvote the topics to indicate interest
- And sign up to Lead a Circle that you're particularly passionate about
- Once we secure a Lead for a Circle, we'll support them in getting their Circle set up so we can launch it in #commons-circles ๐
Circles will continue to be intimate groups ย (<10 people), so seats are highly coveted and only for members of this community! By handing the power of creating Circles to you, we want to be able to launch more Circles so more people can jump into this unique combined learning & networking experience.
๐ช So without further ado ... this month's Circle topics for have officially DROPPED ๐ช
โ
โJump in and secure your spot by signing up to Lead one of them below โฌ๏ธ

Picking the right company
โWe have many community members who are evaluating opportunities at early stage companies, and there have been many discussions around how to pick the right company. Andrew - a new community member - has spent time working in generalist roles across multiple industries - enterprise tech, consumer healthcare, fintech and CPG. Three times, he was brought in as the first non-technical hire to build out operations and execute infrastructure and process improvements, ultimately scaling companies from 0-50 and 20-800.
We asked him for his advice on picking companies to join as the first non-technical hire. Here's what he had to say ๐
"I would love to connect with anyone who needs a listening board or wants feedback on my experiences. The most important lesson is to set personal and professional boundaries.
โHowโd you pick which companies to join?
โThis usually came down to understanding the founder & technical leadsโ ability to provide and take feedback. By having a constant flow of feedback / me questioning process / how decisions are made allows me to quickly start implementing culture across the company so team members can start running in their own lanes without the need for founder approval 24/7."
What are your considerations? Join the thread or DM Andrew in Slack to jam on it!

A man is allocated a task. He doubles the task done everyday. If the man completely does the task in 18 days, how many days did it take for the man to complete 25% of the task?
